Metamask blacklist: a potential threat to your crypto project

Metamask is one of the most popular cryptocurrency wallets. It’s very convenient and lots of projects, such as decentralized exchanges, shops and games, are integrated with it to facilitate the payment process for their users.

Integration with Metamask can help you boost your conversion, as it gives your users a chance to sign up for your project in just a few clicks. However, there’s a potential threat that can bring all your struggles down to zero: Metamask phishing scanner.

If your website gets blacklisted, this is the sweet picture your users will see when they open your website:

The most disturbing thing is that there’s no defined list of what you should NOT do in order not to get blacklisted by Metamask. You may have a wonderful product with armies of fans and good domain reputation and still find yourself in the red zone one day.

Metamask team does a great job by blacklisting potentially malicious projects and thus saving users from money loss. Most of the blacklisted projects are true scammers aiming to reduce the weight of your wallet. But as the demand for Metamask services is too high, it’s not always easy for them to quickly estimate the possible risks, and the good projects may be banned.

If you find your project on the blacklist one day, there’s one thing that can improve your mood: you will find yourself in a good company. Several requests to get the project out of the blacklist appear on Metamask’s github every day:

Send a request yourself, but don’t expect the whitelisting process to be fast.

You will laugh, but there’s even a petition at change.org to make Metamask respond to such requests in a timely manner:

What you can do right now is to try to prevent the disaster before it happens.

Send a request on Metamask Github to whitelist your project and then do whatever their team requires. Send them all the necessary regalia, be polite and moderate.

Also, search through similar requests and check what Metamask requires from other projects. This may give you quite good food for thought.

BTW, the project BestRate.org on which I’m currently working has been added to Metamask whitelist. This is another point on our achievement board and an additional pound to our project’s weight:

The cryptoworld is dark and full of terrors, but forewarned is forearmed. Don’t stand still and protect your crypto project from the known issues before they happen in reality.
